We can visit your school to deliver the CPD courses to your staff, usually as a twilight.
The two main Whole Staff CPD courses we offer are:
Working Scientifically This course looks in detail at the five areas of Working Scientifically and gives lots of ideas on how to do this. See the section on this page below for more.
Making Science Knowledge Stick This will equip you with strategies to prevent pupils forgetting what they have already learnt (by using ‘Sticky Knowledge’ techniques). To see more details on this course, click here.
(We now have a separate website ‘sciencecpd.com’ which details all of our courses- click here)
Working Scientifically for Primary Schools CPD
£250 for Twilight Session or Half Day
Delivering the new curriculum’s Working Scientifically content can seem like a daunting challenge. We’ve organised it into five easily managed areas, so you can be sure you are covering all the requirements and that your pupils have a sound grasp of the science skills needed.
We’ll show you that the whole of Working Scientifically can be covered by the following skills:
Classifying: We’ll carry out a range of hands-on activities to help you get to grips with classifying. We’ll show you ways to get the children to recognise common British plant and animal species that they need to know, simple use of branching keys to sort and games that can really boost learning.
Fair Testing: We’ll look at two excellent planning templates that will help your pupils learn to plan their own investigations. For Key Stage 1 and Reception we’ll introduce you to the Curious Caterpillar. This provides a spring board for them to progress to the Post Its method for KS2. Predicting, manipulating variables, recording results in tables, drawing graphs and analysing results all become a lot easier using this framework!
Observing, Measuring & Changes Over Time: Looking at getting the children to experience the world using all their senses to closely observe what is happening, in a scientific way. Then, we see how specific primary school science equipment can be used to make accurate measurements.
Handling Data and Pattern Seeking: This is a big part of the new curriculum and not difficult, when you know how. We’ll show you how easy it is to generate data using the seasons, habitats within the school grounds and in most of your topics on materials and physics too. We’ll give an introduction to data loggers, showing you that they are not scary and that they will really bring to life some of your investigations!
Research, Asking and Answering Questions: We’ll look at quick and simple methods to get the children generating questions that they can answer themselves, whether by using secondary research, a survey or by conducting a fair test. We’ll also give guidance on some of the famous scientists they can research.
This course can be run as a twilight or half day in your school.
The cost is £250.
All your staff can attend the course (up to a maximum of 28 people)
